A History of Pride's Fight for Expression
The Stonewall Inn in New York City’s Greenwich Village didn't look like a revolution's birthplace. By June 1969, it was one of the few places where LGBTQ+ people, especially drag queens, transgender individuals, homeless youth, and people of colour, could gather somewhat openly. Police raids were routine, but on the hot night of June 28, something different happened. When officers began making arrests, the crowd outside didn't disperse. Instead, they fought back.
This was not the first act of LGBTQ+ resistance in America, but Stonewall became the symbolic flashpoint. For six nights, the streets became a battleground for the right to exist without harassment. The uprising sparked immediate action: within weeks, activist groups formed, and by the following June, the first Christopher Street Liberation Day March marked what we now recognise as the inaugural Pride parade, not a celebration yet, but a defiant public assertion of existence.
